Shaping the Future of Vision Care: SUNY College of Optometry
In the heart of New York City, the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry stands as a global leader in optometric education, vision science research, and patient care. Founded over 50 years ago by a visionary group of optometrists and philanthropists, the College was built on a powerful mission focused on elevating the profession of optometry through educating future optometrists and vision scientists, advancing knowledge with cutting-edge research, and providing high-quality vision care to the community in an academic healthcare setting.
Since welcoming its first class in 1971, SUNY Optometry has grown into one of the world’s premier institutions dedicated to eye and vision health. Home to the University Eye Center—one of the largest outpatient vision care facilities in the United States— and three research centers, the College delivers vital services to the community while serving as a real-world training ground for future optometric leaders.
New Syracuse Location
Beginning in Fall 2027, SUNY Optometry will offer students the choice of studying in the heart of New York City or at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. This expansion builds on the College’s longstanding commitment to excellence in education, pioneering vision science research, and service, preparing the next generation of optometrists to advance vision health across New York State and beyond.
