Dear College Community,

At the College, our core mission continues to guide us: educating future eye doctors, advancing research in eye and vision health, and providing eye care to all who need it. This mission remains our focus, even as we experience and acknowledge the broader societal issues around us.

As the tragic events in the Middle East continue, many within our college community have been deeply affected. The upcoming U.S. elections have also added to the heightened tensions we are all experiencing. During these challenging times, it is more important than ever for us, as a college community, to focus on unity in mission, mutual support, and respect for one another. Even when opinions differ, we must come together and uphold these values to ensure a supportive and respectful environment for all.

As a college and place of higher learning, we also value and uphold the principles of free speech and expression, understanding that these rights are fundamental in the United States and academy. However, it is equally important that we foster an environment where all feel safe and respected. Acts of antisemitism, Islamophobia, or any form of discrimination cannot be tolerated. We remain committed to ensuring that freedom of expression is balanced with the need for a work and learning environment free from harassment, as outlined by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

I ask our entire community—students, faculty, and staff—to engage with one another thoughtfully and with empathy, particularly in interactions involving difficult and emotionally charged topics. Our strength as a community lies in our ability to listen to and respect each other, even in times of disagreement.

The College, like the rest of the SUNY System, will remain content-neutral but support the right of peaceful and respectful expressions of opinion. As outlined in our policy on Freedom of Expression and Assembly (policy), any meetings or gatherings that do not interfere with academic, patient care, or research activities will be permitted, provided they are properly organized and communicated with the administration.

As always, my door is open. Please feel free to reach out with any thoughts, questions, or concerns. Together, let’s continue to support each other and build a community rooted in respect, civility, and shared purpose during these challenging times.
