Eyes on New York Scholarship
What does receiving this award or scholarship mean to you?
To me, this scholarship is a recognition of my hard work and dedication at SUNY Optometry. This support from my community keeps me motivated. This scholarship also, of course, relieves some of the financial burden that comes with being a graduate student. It is comforting to know that even with all of my responsibilities as an OD student, I will not have to worry about paying a part of my tuition thanks to this generous and thoughtful gift. I am very grateful to have received this scholarship.
What drew you to the field of optometry?
I have had experience interacting with eye care providers both personally and professionally, and they have inspired me to make a positive impact on eye and vision care. It is a goal of mine to specialize in pediatrics to make meaningful change early in children’s lives. My first pair of glasses was life-changing for me. Seeing clearly for the first time, at such a young age, is extraordinary. Being alongside other children when they have similar experiences is what drew me to the field of optometry.
What are your plans following graduation?
I am a first year student, so I am open to pursuing different paths in eye care following graduation. As of now, my post-graduation goal would be to start a residency in pediatric optometry.
What advice would you give incoming or prospective optometry students?
My advice would be to plan ahead and maintain a good work life balance. Get involved in the optometric community, and gain as much clinical experience as possible. It will be helpful to implement good habits such as managing your time and staying organized and to gain exposure in the field ahead of time.
