Dr. Nathan and Laura Millman Scholarship
What does receiving this award or scholarship mean to you?
I am honored and grateful to receive this scholarship. As an international student from Canada, I feel fortunate to attend one of the most distinguished optometry programs in the United States, and this financial support helps to alleviate my out of state tuition fees. As I continue my studies at SUNY, this recognition will serve as an encouragement for me to continue to work hard and excel as a future optometrist.
What drew you to the field of optometry?
I believe that vision is one of the most vital human gifts for an individual to have. Being able to help people with their eyesight is a humbling experience, and I was drawn to the idea of developing impactful and genuine relationships with patients.
What are your plans following graduation?
By pursuing a Master of Science in addition to my optometric degree, I aim to use my experience in clinical research to enhance my care to future patients. In particular, I am interested in the areas of pediatrics and vision therapy, and hope to contribute to areas of optometry in both the United States and Canada.
What was your most transformative experience during optometry school?
The clinical exposure provided at SUNY has been some of the most transformative experiences in optometry school thus far. Being able to observe unique eye conditions in a diverse patient population outside of a lecture setting has been very enriching and impactful.
What advice would you give incoming or prospective optometry students?
Take advantage of the numerous outreach and networking opportunities that SUNY offers. There are many events throughout your time as a student that connect you with members of the optometric community, such as in industry, private practices, and academia. Not only will attending these events help you build future relationships when you graduate, but can give you a better idea of the mode of practice you’d like to achieve as an optometrist.
